Sapa & Hà Giang – Why We Don’t Ride There
Sapa is one of Vietnam’s most well-known destinations, and for good reason — it’s beautiful. That said, it’s also extremely touristy and heavily developed. Busy roads, constant traffic, tour buses, and crowds mean it’s simply not suited to the kind of relaxed, immersive motorcycle touring we believe in. For us, Sapa isn’t a motorcycle destination — it’s a sightseeing stop best enjoyed in other ways.
Hà Giang, on the other hand, is undeniably spectacular. The landscapes are raw, dramatic, and unforgettable. Unfortunately, in recent years it has been overwhelmed by mass tourism. Thousands of backpackers ride scooters daily — many inexperienced, many riding as passengers with easy riders — which has dramatically changed the feel of the region.
On top of this, Hà Giang Province is now heavily policed. Checkpoints are frequent, and stops are common. We recently watched a travel vlog where riders were stopped 17 times during a three-day loop. For us, that level of enforcement and congestion takes away from the freedom, flow, and enjoyment that make motorbike travel special.
Moto Viet focuses on quieter regions, lesser-known roads, and places where riding still feels natural, unhurried, and authentic — where the journey is the reward, not the crowds.
